Patrick's Career Goals

Patrick wanted to strengthen his dedication to community service and apply his consulting and business expertise to social-minded organizations. "My long term goal has always been to start and lead my own social enterprise," he explains.

...

Patrick believed that USALC would not only provide him with a great entrepreneurial skill set but also strengthen his candidacy for top MBA programs.

Patrick's Client

One of Patrick's two USALC clients was the founder of a Michigan-based reading center that offers reading instruction for students and adults and training for developing teachers.

..

Because several competing organizations that provided similar services closed recently due to funding deficits, the founder anticipated an increase in demand for her services. Thus, she wanted to re-evaluate her business model in order to best leverage the new business climate.

..

To accomplish this goal, Patrick led a three-month goal planning engagement that would identify new ways the center could reach more customers and become even more profitable...

Patrick's Success

Together, Patrick and the owner analyzed each service provided by the center and the capacity at which each service could be operating. They then formulated an overall goal to increase annual revenues by 45% over the next three years.

Later they dissected that goal into several quantifiable and manageable sub-goals. The client was delighted with this breakthrough. However, many challenges remained: identifying key market points, defining a relevant customer base, and creating a strategy to reach out to potential customers.

.

Patrick mentored the owner as they segmented the center's customer base according to its service offerings. This effort required educating the owner on the demographics of her customers, defining cost-effective marketing techniques (such as targeted email marketing), and identifying opportunities to offer add-on services to increase total revenue per customer.

The final project deliverables were an Excel-based model that evaluated the center's growth and Word templates that the founder could use to better market her services.

Patrick and the Business School Application Process

"My USALC experience was a critical component to developing a compelling story for my essays," Patrick explains. "It helped to me answer those key questions such as 'Why MBA? and Why Now?"

Patrick was able to demonstrate clear leadership experience, a commitment to community service, and my ability to deliver tangible results in an unstructured and challenging environment. Also, his USALC experience closely related to many business school clubs at his target schools such as those focused on social enterprise, consulting, entrepreneurship, and management.

"I truly believe that I have improved my leadership skills - a skill often sought by MBA programs," he concludes. "I would highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to go to business school or wants to gain leadership and management experience outside of work."
